There are several reasons to get into it: 1. Linux is more versatile than windows 2. This OS offers you convenient development environment 3. You can built in self written software to manage some bare metal devices directly from OS However this will require HUGE amount of time, you will grow beard and sweater, got addicted to coffein, your eyes will become red. Sometimes you will suffer from random aggression attacks. 9/10 reccomend

It will help you a lot, it's easier to work in an unix based operating system rather than windows, the raspberry pi works on linux, probably your robot software will be executable in a unix computer

There are multiple approaches to robotic. The first issue that you should solve is whether lr not you want to become an engineer in electronics or write code, as you may not be able to learn how to do both at a high level, for lack of time. If you want to become the latter, you will basically learn AI, and to this regard I can suggest you to start studying the theory about artificial intelligence, and only later to go into coding. I do not know enough about electronics to advise you on that other regard though.

If you are talking about industrial robotics like motoman(yaskawa), kuka, fanuc or ABB then 0. Robot studio for ABB robots are free to download and has a trail for the more advances stuff for 30 days. writing logic code for robots is much akin to writing a computer program, but you have to be aware not only what you program dose, but what happens IRL with for example loads being accelerated and not crashing. ;)

Most software library creators assume you work on Linux and though you, theoretically, can use everything on Windows, it involves even more hacks and work-arounds when working on Windows than on Linux.

It all depends on how you’ll be developing. Most robotics kits can be developed on any OS, but if you’re going from scratch with just a random ARM chip or something, it’ll be easier to use something like a raspberry pi running Linux
